As part of the Tour De France 2023 trip, we stayed for two nights in Donzenac on our way in between Ile D’Oleron and Morzine.
Sunday 30th
We traveled from Ile D’Oleron to Donzenac reasonably trouble free. Motorway slowness around Bourdeux caused us to take a bit more of a scenic cut through the route, but worked out well, got to see lots of small towns and completed the drive in about 5hrs.
We pitched up at a small campsite, seeming designed for people on long journeys, and the place allowed us to pick our own pitch – a highlight both kids have called out. It only took us about an hour to setup and once done and showered we ventured up to the Medevial hilltop town next to the site to find dinner.

Within a few hundred meters of the campsite Lottie was stung by a wasp which looked very painful – it being right inside the elbow – but after a bit of biteeze, we were back on our way.
We went to an amazing restaurant which the maitre de only spoke French to us but we had lovely food and wine.
Monday 31st
For our ‘not travelling’ day we wanted to visit a slate quarry… after breakfast we set off on the cycle up the hill but when we got there we found the site and the cafe were shut for lunch.
We cycled up to where the view point should be but unfortunately capitalism or health and safety made them close it but since we had the drone with us we sent it up for some photos we couldn’t get from standing there.

After returning from our cycle we went to the supermarket to top up on supplies and to refuel the car. Juli and Lottie got a little lost in the stationary isle but after they found their way out we paid and returned to the campsite.
Fridge refilled Juli and the kids went back to the slate mine in the car and paid for the French only tour guide.
